Sandy turns out to be SLK in baidu? That's great! But why LUO cried NO?

Xiao Ge has a song named 锣声若响? i've got no impression at all

BTW, Karen, have you noticed we usually call chyichin XIAOGE 小哥? XIAO means little, young, GE means elder brother, big brother.  i don't know when and where this nickname came from, but people around him all call him like this, so..... we'd like to fondly call him xiaoge.

#6 Gong Sound If Sound is how it translates. It's from his "Gloomy Month"  album in 1994.
And yes I read you Midnight Lily.........  I use Babel Fish and sometimes things translate very oddly. You must forgive me if I come up with odd terms.

I found this wonderful topic and I thank you all for sharing. I hope you understand if I miss things because it's a bit laborious to translate every page to find things. I have wandered all over the site and looked at other topics.  I must say your members are incredibly expressive and very poetic in their comments on Chyi Chin's music. I am jealous . I can't express myself half as well. I am sure I will navigate better after I work at it awhile.

For now I will just say that you have made me a "Happy Camper".

You are correct that the album is called Dim Moon. I knew it was in a dialect but didn't know which one. I think Chyi Chin loved it and no one else did. I stick with whatever the translater comes up with so I recognize it when I see it again. My fondest hope is that a better translater will come along, and I'm sure it will with all these young genius computer people working on it.  I have song titles that are hopelessly mangled, and sometimes an entire paragraph will come out that doesn't make a bit of sense.

I have a list of names of other artists in English and with their Chinese name so I can use the name in search engines, My current favorite is Wang Feng  汪峰. I just put the name in the search engine and bingo-I've got it.
I'm curious about Power Station -are they still around? I think they are very good.

I'm talking too much! Somebody stop me! I can't believe I can ask questions............

I am pretty much up on the news. It looks to me like the Xi'an concert was a great success. I was happy to see photos of Wang Feng. I've listened to him for a couple of years. Here is a link to photos in case you missed them.  Were you at the concert in 1999?  The funny thing is-the next weekend-August 8th-Chyi Chin and Chyi Yu were at Casino Rama in Orillia, Ontario, Canada. If you look at the distance from my home in St. Cloud, Minnesota to Orillia, Ontario it is about 950 miles.  (You go in between  the Great Lakes and take a left Ha Ha) I tried to come up with a plan to go but simply couldn't afford it. That man must spend half of his life on airplanes.

HI ~~KK!
The power station is still around, but they don't have new album for several  years...
Have you still remembered the song《The love song of Betrayal》&《Tomorrow Never Dies》,the chinese name is《背叛情歌》,the other is《明天的明天的明天》。these two songs are their classic songs.
They are the Gaoshanzu nationality (the aboriginal living in Taiwan Province),do you know the artist named Chang huei-mei(A-Mei),her chinese name is 张惠妹.she also is Gaoshanzu, her songs are beatiful too.

No, no, I love the two dialect albums! I'm not into those old songs but chyichin arranged them in a good way.  In a way, I like his dialect pieces even more than the mandarin ones. That's because he tried more styles on them and I like him singing rock and jazze. I always belive he could've done more if the listeners were more open. 天,我的英文,都说了些什么!
作者: Karen_Koerner    时间: 2010-8-13 12:39

Thank you for that explanation about Gaoshanzu Nationality. I didn't understand that. I like both Power Station songs you named and I also really like one I think is called "Rainbow". It had a great music video with a little league baseball team and their coach gearing them up for victory. Very touching video. There is a recording of Chyi Chin and Power Station singing a duet of  "Wolf" that is very good. It very much reflects Power Station's guitar style. Love it.

I am also familiar with A-Mei. She is wonderful and now I have learned about her nationality. You guys are teaching me a lot. My current list of favorites also includes 郑钧 Zheng Jun. I don't spend much time following other artists because it takes a lot of time just to follow Chyi Chin, but I try to keep track of what they are doing.
I am only familiar with little slivers of Chinese music in the middle of the greater whole. Do my choices tell you anything about me?

Thanks to all,
KK

Hi Karen,
Nice to meet you here. Since you like Chyi Chin so much, why don't try some songs of his sister Chyi Yu? When you listen to her songs like The Answer or others, you may think of Enya, a singer from Ireland. But we Chinese people like Chyi Yu much better than Enya. She is our angel.

Introduce myself somehow to you. Apart from a fan of Chyi Chin, I also like Amencian band The Eagles and Gemany band The Scorpions. My alias Firefly was from a song of Soul Asylum. Wish you take home here! : )

Yours friendly,
Firefly

#43 Messenger Bird?  I hope you are not affected by the tragic flooding in Gansu. The news said that the heavy rains in Shaanxi and Sichuan are contributing to the flooding and mudslides. I hope all are safe. You say you live in Xi'an, the home of the Terracotta Warriors. Are they as magnificent as I imagine they are?

Firefly  I am a tremendous fan of Chyi Yu. She does sing like an angel and is so beautiful. I wish she and Chyi Chin would record more together. I know they appear on stage together frequently, but if you look they have recorded very little together. I think an album of them singing together would be wonderful and would live on after them, as their single works will. It is certainly easy to see that he adores her.

Claire  You are so right about Xiaoge recording in other styles. I think he is a wonderful jazz stylist-again because of the emotion he puts into everything he sings.  What album besides "Dim Moon" is a dialect album? I'd like to go back and listen again.

Cheers,
KK

Messenger Bird: You may very well be right about liking music that gives us faith and power. I can't understand the lyrics, but I can certainly understand the feeling that an artist puts into a song and the feeling created by the song. As for rock and roll, yes, I love it. To me a good rock song starts slow-revs up-has great musicians-and stays revved up right to the end. I think Chyi Chin is a rocker at heart. He certainly can ROCK & ROLL when he wants to.

I didn't even realize "Innocent" was a dialect album. For some reason that is my favorite album of all. I know it was done the same year he won honors for "Silk Road" but I have always liked it better. It's the kind of album you listen to late at night. The jazz interpretations make me wish he would sing more jazz..........
作者: claire    时间: 2010-8-16 11:00

I can't agree with you more that he's a rocker at heart.

Haha, you didn't realize INNOCENT was in dialect? I think the Minnan ( South Fujian province) dialect sounds quite different from mandarin. I't s completely a foreign language  for people outside the Minnan-speaking area. Those songs were written around 1950, with heavy taste of traditional Japanese music, for Taiwan had been occupied by Japan for a long time before then.  Minnan songs are very popular in Taiwan until today but I dont like them at all. Chyichin actually gave the old and  rustic songs a fresh life. I also like INNOCENT better than DIM MOON.

I like A-mei very much and I went to her Shanghai concert in 2002, and that was fantastic. But I'm not familiar with her recent pieces.
萤火虫, The Scorpions is one of my favorite bands, too.

No, I didn't know "Innocent" was a dialect album. I went back and compared it to "Silk Road" and I could tell. My big conclusion was........OMG How beautifully that man sings!  I don't have a good ear for languages, it's more like just impressions. I recently have found several Pinyin lyrics for Chyi Chin songs and it helps me to read along with a song to understand the language a little better.  I have also thought that he has perfect, clear diction. Even his speaking voice is so perfect. I collected about 10 versions of "Moon Represent My Heart" and I heard some pretty bad Mandarin in there!!!!!  The first music I listened to was in Cantonese, and I found it very harsh sounding. When I discovered Mandarin it was like discovering treasure.

Do I have this right? "Dim Moon" and "Innocent" are both dialect albums-in different dialects? Would he record these for a Taiwan audience?

Speaking of Fujian-isn't that where the big earthquake scare is taking place right now? People are actually leaving because a hoax was pulled that a big earthquake was coming?   That remind me, how many of you have seen the movie "Aftershock"?  It sounds like a gargantuan hit. No one can see it without crying. I love a movie that gives you a good cry. (My favorite directors are Wong Kar Wai, Zhang Yimou, and Johnnie To in Hong Kong-along with many others. I love Asian movies, also).

Would anyone mind telling me where you are from, so I can look up your location?

I am so conscious that this is English practice for some of you that I go back and re-check everything I type to make sure it as proper as I can make it. No pressure!!!

Too many questions again,
KK

Dim Moon & Innocent were both in Minnan dialect and the orgiginal songs were from the same era.

You're so right that Chin's pronounciation of Mandarin is excellent., which have made his songs more beautiful and outstanding among many other singers.  We fans even enjoy his speaking because of both his voice and the good diction. Unfortunately, his diction has been not so clere after having false teeth. Cantonese as well as Minnanese does sound very harsh, and few native speakers of those dialects can pronouce Mandarin correctly, not to mention beautifully.

Sorry, I cant' be helpful about the chinese movies

It's thoughtful of you being careful of your english wringting

Wow. He has false teeth? At such a young age? I never would have guessed. What happened?  When did he get them? Wouldn't it take a singer a long time to get back to normal?
Also-where did he get those gashes on his nose and forehead?  I've always wondered about that.

I'm going to ask an indiscreet question. What is the tattoo that he has on his lower belly? There, I've said it. Inquiring minds want to know............................................

As long as I'm asking about physical characteristics-I'm going to mention his weight gain. I think he looks adorable and healthy with a few pounds on him. The trick is to wear clothes that fit!  He just plain old looks like a happy man and the weight gives him presence. I've noticed that some news reports refer to that little bulge around the middle as a "swimmers ring". We have a better term-we call the bulge around the hips "Love Handles". (Think about it a minute and you'll know why!!) Is that a term you have in China? If not-let's get it introduced in China.

Do you find his shape of mouth, even the whole face has changed a lot? All thanks to the false teeth. I'm not sure when he got them, should be 2008. Anyone knows it better?

The tatoo is a small dragon and it can be seen in a still photo shot for the album 2003. AFAIK, he got it in the reformatory and he didn't do it willingly - some bad boys  forced him - a sad story.

He got the gash on the nose from a bad accident. Just as you know, young chyichin was wild. His motorcycle crashed into a pillar at a high speed and his body bounced up. Half of his face scraped along the ground and he was almost disfiguired. He once said his right (or left?)  cheekbone is flat but I can barely tell it, can you?  I guess it happened between 1981 and 1985. As to the forehead scar, he had it after a minor car accident in Shanghai in 2002.

Yes, we call the bulge swimmers swing, and there's another term "beer belly", which suits him better 'cause he drinks too much. And I think it's hard for him to get rid of the fat in his belly

Do you find his shape of mouth, even the whole face has changed a lot? All thanks to the false teeth. I'm not sure when he got them, should be 2008. Anyone know it better?

The tatoo is a small d ...
Yes , I have also found...I am always  thinking aboout the gash on his nose  ,it must be form an accident....as you said,it is very very serious, how dangerous!

And his beer belly is very evident, besides his age ,drinking too much is the primary cause...I know he pretty love strong wine like the Red Star Erguotou in Beijing ,the sorghum wine in Taiwan .
I guess he must liked the Hengshui Dry wine(衡水老白干) em.......  S-E-X-Y~~~

talking about Love Handles, we also call it Muffin Top, not very pretty but tasty.....

i think i prefer the term of Love Handle better, you know, as you grow older, there are a lot of things to lose, teeth, hair, s**,  but only love you can hold on...

Those early years in the reformatory must have been much harder on him than I thought. I know he was confined at home after that and then served in the military for 3 years. Is that mandatory for young men in Taiwan? Then he worked to get recognized in music for several years. He basically lost the years of his youth from 16 to 23 or 24 years old, but those must be the experiences that formed him.

I think his first album was sugary pop music that sounded like they were trying to make him a record company creation. When he blazed out with “Wolf” he was already 26 years old, and he certainly had found his own voice. He must have had people who believed in him to get that album made. I think that success allowed him to have his own voice, thank heavens. Since I have been corresponding with you guys, I have gone back to earlier works and I have much more appreciation for young Chyi Chin. Man, he was so good! He got better, and better, and better………… He never stops learning.

He must have been a bit of a wild young man. When he says Wang Zuxian's parents didn't approve of him, it's probably true. Something else I sense from interviews is that he regrets, and possibly feels inferior, for not having a University education. He seems to want to teach music at some point.

Gong-I visited your wonderful website and I especially like your music choices. I recognized a lot of the songs. I love "Fool's Wharf" (?) with Panda Xiong. I also saw the terrific photos of the Chyi Chin press  conference/fan meeting. Where did it take place?
Are you the one presenting him with a gift? How exciting. You must tell me about it. If you'd like to write in Chinese I will use a translator.

Before I forget-Hey, Hey SLK. I didn't sign up, several wonderful people did it for me because I could never figure out how.

More later,
KK

I don't think anyone could leave you behind... they did a wonderful job,
as for me, I didn't even know (or anyone else) I exist until you turned up...sad story...

maybe he was wild, maybe he has settled, or maybe he is just simply doing the things he like, regardless of what had happened and what is going on. He is still in the public eyes. It is a lovely thing for the fans and all the people rely on him

I am going to leave the stories to the experts, for I really don't know much about him for the last ten years, i still enjoy his music, wish him all the best

I went back and looked at older pictures and you are right, he always smiled  with his mouth closed or gives a little half smile. That was ok when he was trying to look like a dangerous bad boy.
If he had bad teeth that is a habit people get into, always keeping their mouth closed when they smile. One thing I have noticed recently is that he gives a full 1000 watt smile and he smiles with his eyes. You can always tell how this guy is doing by his eyes. Lately this man has been very joyful. Here I have been giving credit to Ya Ya for ** him happy and maybe it's just his teeth!!  No matter what, that smile is a pleasure to see.

The photos of my Sina blog are taken on July 11.It is a press conference before the concert in Xi'an.
I am the one presenting him with a gift,
The gift is a DVD disc about the Angel and wolf concert 1988,It is made by Small FIsh In our forum,Thanks.
For a long time,This concert has not any video on the Internet.Because this,The dish production process is very difficult.Chyi Chin was deeply know of this,So he is very happy to see this gift,Of course,I am also very happy.
Here is the link forum posts:http://bbs.chyichin.net/viewthread.php?tid=54979
There are some simple text descriptions.

作者: Karen_Koerner    时间: 2010-8-19 17:25

The photos are just wonderful. What a marvelous gift. Do you live in Xi'an? Did you get to go to the concert?

The link will not work for me. It just keeps asking me to log in and every time I do it rejects it.  ???  Any other description of where it is so I can go hunting?  What subject and date?

Did you see me on Chyi Chin's Sina Blog.? Those are terrible pictures and I really don't look that old and fat darn it. It was so hot, and I waited in the heat so long that my head was fried. My face is red from sunburn and even the part in my hair was sunburned!!! The cop on duty kept telling me to come in and sit down, but I was afraid I would miss him. I would have because he came in the side driveway and went in a side door.

I went back and listened to the album from which your name comes. It's very, very good. Wonderful musicianship. Now that I know about the dialect I could clearly hear it. It is not as harsh as Cantonese, and it sounds like it has less syllables than Mandarin.  He does a little rock on that album too.

Later,

Yes he went through a lot but the experiences also made him tough. In the reformatory, his basin for washing face was a container for pig s-h-i-t (used as fertilizer) at the same time. He had to carry burdens weighted 100 kilos – all heard from recent interviews. After that, his father confined him at home in case he would hang out with those he knew in the reformatory. He got up 5:30 every morning and began to practice calligraphy, listen to English over radio and recite Chinese masterpieces. Military service is mandatory for young men in Taiwan.

You were so right about his debut record. That was obviously not his style. But, still, he did a great job effortlessly, and the title song hit NO. 1 of single top. But he received the advice from the army only two months later. Actually, the idea of wolf was completely unacceptable to the head of the record company at first. But chyichin insisted at the cost of being frozen for a long time and signing a cheap contract of another 5 years with the company.

I think he’s a real genius. He said he did not know he could sing until 19. And as you say, he’s been improving himself all the time.

Forgot to tell you that Innocent was also nominated for Best male dialect artist that year, but finally only Silk Road won the honor of best male mandarin artist.

I don’t think his own teeth looked bad or he was ashamed to show his teeth as you can see in the following pictures. The false teeth make his mouth puckered or caved in (I don't know which word to pick). That's awful. I guess he laughs more becuase he gets used to the camera in these years.

Unless I'm mistaken this is some pretty potent stuff. I'm so curious. I know it's cultural to drink in banquet settings or when celebrating. If I remember reading old articles, the rainbow band used to fill their water bottles with "white liquor" and drink while performimg to really get things going, so it wasn't unheard of that liquor was part of the creative process. They probably just matured out of needing it. I also remember reading that Chyi Chin might loosen up his voice when recording with a little white liquor. I have songs that I label "white liquor voice" because they are absolute velvet!!  He obviously drinks to relax. I have this crazy idea that the year he was home studying the classics and English and developing a persona he may have been influenced by the characteristics of the Tang poets who if I understand correctly used liquor to free their creative impulses and spent a lot of time contemplating nature under the influence. Any other theories????

Please tell the truth if I am just a crazy American!!!!

Gong,
Your photos of the Aug 1st concert are wonderful. It looks like you all had such a good time, and made a weekend out of it. I'm amazed you were able to meet him at the airport, and he certainly takes the time to greet fans. I like that one photo where you are looking at miniature terracotta figures. It would be the dream of my life to visit China, but I'm afraid that will only happen if I win the lottery!! So if I ever win the lottery-LOOK OUT-I'll be there.

I'm going to ask a really dumb question. Is this the official Chyi Chin Fan Page and is this the official Chyi Chin Fan Forum?

Thank you for sharing,
KK

PS: If anyone runs into Chyi Chin-tell him hello from Karen in Minnesota!!

Gong,
The card is great. I really like it. We've got to get on Chyi Chin to get his page updated. It should be State of the Art! He's the guy interested in every new technology that comes along-always on the cutting edge. Doesn't he buy every new thing? What was it in Taiwan-sunglasses that record? Isn't he the one who uses every new sound equipment that comes out? There must be talented people in his company that could turn out a good page that's up to date.  (Maybe they could include some English content He He.)  What do you think?

Xiaoge-Please  Update the Page (for all of us adoring fans)

( I give Ya Ya a lot of credit for that. My intuition tells me she has made him a home. I have nothing but the best wishes for them.)
I wanted to ask a question-I was reading the terrible story about the hostage taking of Hong Kong tourists on a Manila bus. The video was just tragic. Several posters mentioned you should have sent changguan.
What are Changguan? I was reading about it on chinaSMACK.com

作者: 锣声若响    时间: 2010-8-26 17:51

'Chengguan'~~How funny and satirized!
This word means the person should called "city manager".The job of them is to maintain the appearance in a city. But most of their work, they are checking-up the small retailer which no license and the booth on the sidewalk temporarily.
and clean-up the people when the government will demolition their house.
Most of them were very rude and violent.Of course, someone were good. But,It is generally considered Chengguan is very bad.
You can use Google to search for 城 管.I think you will find many pictures and video.
By the way, It must also be clear that they are  without any weapons.

I am going to ask a more serious question because I really don't know the answer. How good a guitarist is Xiaoge? I have not seen enough to judge. I do remember reading an interview where Wang ZuXian was asked what she liked best about his talent. Her answer surprised me. She said she liked his music best when he played guitar, because he played like no one else. Can you tell me a little bit more?

Thanks

This was done by Babelfish. Can you read it?  I would love to hear from you if you don't speak or read English.

I wanted to share this website because I think it is awesome. I don't know if it will work. Some of the photos are a few years old-but it gives such an idea of the mixture of the very old and the very new.  Chyi Chin gets to go to so many fabulous cities. I always wonder if he takes the time to see these cities or spend any time there. Can he go out and be a tourist, or is he too famous? I have learned about the cities in China by following his concert schedule.

From then on, he began his music career...

That's what I wondered. He was younger than I thought when he knew what he wanted to do. I didn't know he was only 16. If he practiced 10 hours a day he was serious. Wasn't he 26 years old when he had such a huge hit with "Wolf"?  I also always wondered how he seemed to have his own voice and individual style so strongly with that album. He had about 10 years to work up to it.

I always pictured that he had the same effect on young Chinese fans as Elvis had back in the fifties on young Americans. Something so new and completely different. That also helps explain why he worships his sister, Chyi Yu. I know he always says without Chyi Yu, there would be no Chyi Chin.

Thanks

When I play the music on this site-can anyone tell me what song #306 is and who he is singing with?  Is that possibly Julie Su/Su Ren? Great voice, whoever it is. He's got a great blues voice and they blend well! Great guitars on that one, too.

I know of one early record that sounds like typical record company bubblegum music. I was thinking he got signed by some record company-and they can do awful things to young artists when they try to package them. He must have had some strong support, or he had to be very stubborn, to be able to sing his own songs in his own voice. Did he stand out as being very different at the time "Wolf" came out?
作者: 青鸟    时间: 2010-9-9 21:15

In my opinion, his music style is pretty modern in the 1980s in China... so CHYICHIN  was very popular among the youny people.

I think that's why he can sing his own songs in his voice without the record company arrangement on purpose .
He also affects the generation.

I must share this thought with you. I was listening to songs from "Beautiful Mind" this morning and I am blown away with how beautiful that album is. It has such an intimate sound that you can't imagine someone walking up to a microphone and sounding like that. It is more like he is in the room singing. I don't understand a word, but that voice is pure heart. I have never felt that way about any other singer, and it is just like fate that I was lucky enough to discover him. What are the odds of hearing a singer from half way around the world singing in a language I don't understand and finding a way to learn about him. I think all of you feel the same way-he has brought something special to our lives. That must be rewarding for him, too.

All the best,
KK
